21-year-old pleads not guilty to drug possession

KUCHING: A jobless teenager is facing life imprisonment for allegedly having in his possession 60.17 grams of cannabis.

The 21-year-old accused Awang Hasbullah Awang Romawi from Kampung Semariang Jaya here pleaded not guilty to the charge framed against him under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same act.

The penalty carries a life imprisonment and whipping
upon conviction. He allegedly possessed the dangerous drug during a raid conducted by the police on July 7 after midnight
at his house.

The accused appeared before Sessions Court judge Timothy Finlayson Joel, who ordered him to be further remanded as the offence is non-bailable.

The judge set Nov 11 for pre-trial case management prior to the trial hearing fixed on March 21, 22 and 23 next year.

In an unrelated case, four men aged between 17 and 60 were slapped with a RM1,500 fine each after they pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to have been involved in illegal gambling called ‘holo chim’.

They admitted to have played the illegal game at Jalan Market here at 10.20pm on Oct 10, 2013.

They were convicted on a charge under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act, 1953.

During the raid at the place, game paraphernalia and table money amounting to RM21 were seized.
