KUCHING: The request for water supply to Kampung Kupang in Saratok is currently being addressed by Public Works Department (JKR) Betong office.

State JKR, in response to a news report on The Borneo Post dated Oct 2 highlighting the request, said the matter had received the attention of the chief minister, who directed for immediate action to be taken.

As an immediate and interim measure, JKR Betong is installing communal water storage tanks at Kampung Kupang (Kampung Hulu, Kampung Hilir and Kampung Tengah) to receive treated water supplied by mobile water tankers.

The department had also initiated works to interconnect the existing Saratok town water supply system to the recently commissioned 25 million litres per day (MLD) Kaki Wong water treatment plant.

The interconnection of a 315mm-diameter high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline to the existing 160mm-diameter HDPE pipeline supplying Saratok town, that will help improve pressure to Saratok town and Kampung Kupang, is expected to be completed by end of this month.

Kampung Kupang, situated across Sungai Krian, has its water supplied via a 160mm-diameter HDPE submarine main 3.5km from Kampung Telok Melango near Saratok town.

To improve water distribution further, state JKR recently awarded contracts for the replacement and upgrading of old pipelines in Saratok town and also for the installation of a booster system complete with ground storage tank in the vicinity of Kampung Melango in order to address the issues of low water pressure in Saratok town and Kampung Kupang.

Both projects are scheduled to be completed by April next year.
