Yuen family expresses gratitude for words of comfort, support

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of Communist-era hero and former Perak police chief Tan Sri Yuen Yuet Leng, who died last week aged 88, has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the words of comfort and support during their bereavement.

Susan Yuen Sumin, 56, said the hundreds of floral tributes and messages of condolences from her father’s friends, former colleagues and the business community had given her family tremendous support and strength.

“We are indeed grateful for that,” she said in a statement on behalf of Yuen’s family here yesterday.

She thanked the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah and Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim for their floral tribute.

“Our family is very thankful to Sultan Nazrin for his acknowledgement that ‘our beloved nation has lost a patriotic son who had served his King and country with distinction’,” said Susan.

Yuen died of heart ailment on Thursday. His remains were laid to rest at the Nilai Memorial Park with full Royal Malaysian Police honours on Saturday.

Yuen is also survived by widow, Puan Sri Chan Choy May and another daughter, Marina Chan Chean Gaik, 54, and two grandchildren who are in their 20s.

Susan also said that a floral tribute from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor was testimony of their recognition of her late father’s contribution to the nation.

She thanked Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his presence at the Xiao En Centre to pay his last respects to Yuen.

She expressed gratitude to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar for according her late father a funeral with full police honours.

Similar expressions of gratitude for words of comfort, support and presence were conveyed by the family to, among others, former IGP Tun Hanif Omar, Sarawak Government, Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang, former armed forces commander Jeneral (B) Tan Sri Mohamed Hashim Mohd Ali and former tourism minister Tan Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Yuen, who had fondly been described as a ‘super cop’ for his innumerable achievements and successes in the course of his brilliant career had also served as Sarawak police commissioner. — Bernama
