KUALA LUMPUR: Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has been awarded the inaugural ‘Tokoh Pertubuhan Kebangsaan’ in recognition of his contribution to society and the country’s socio-economic development.

The award was initiated by the Registrar of Societies to recognise those who have contributed immensely to the country’s socio-economic development through active involvement in community works and social organisations.

The award was presented to Lee by Home Ministry secretary-general Dato’ Sri Alwi Ibrahim at the 2015 National Societies Festival Gala Dinner last Sunday in Jitra, Kedah.

The 68-year-old National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman, who is the first recipient of the newly introduced award, sees it as an encouragement for him to continue his active involvement in community work and contribute to society including fostering social cohesion and unity.

Lee said: “I’m touched and honoured by this award, which I would love to share with all my NGO colleagues. I view my involvement in NGOs as important because they are partners of the government in national development.”

“Although I have retired from politics after being a ‘wakil rakyat’ for 23 years, I want to continue serving the nation in various capacities.

“In a way, I humbly hope this award can be an example for others to give back to society and also serve society in various ways.”

Lee was the State Legislative Assemblyman for Bukit Neneas, Selangor from 1969 to 1974 and Bukit Bintang Member of Parliament from 1974 to 1990.

He is also the chairman of Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, vice-chairman of Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation, member of Board of Trustees of 1Malaysia Foundation and chairman of Public Awareness Action Committee on Organ Donation.
