KOTA KINABALU: Skilled graduates from higher learning institutions have the capacity to create job opportunities for other job seeking graduates, said Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching.

Speaking at the “Technical Vocational Education and Training” (TVET) 2015 career carnival held at the Politeknik Kota Kinabalu near here yesterday, she said her ministry aspires to create students who were capable of creating job opportunities for other people.

She said, for example, when a student from Politeknik Kota Kinabalu started a resort, the graduate has opened up career possibilities for others who are seeking jobs.

The carnival involved the participation of three TVET institutes, namely Politeknik Malaysia, Kolej Komuniti and Kolej Vokasional.

Mary also proposed industry players to aggressively carry out promotional efforts as this will lure more Sabahans to enter into skills training.

She added that the community still perceive skills training negatively and that the preference was still towards academic education.

“But there has been a lot of success for skilled graduates,” she said, adding that Sabah has high potential in various sectors involving various skills.

Meanwhile, Kolej Komuniti education department director general, Datuk Amir Md Noor, said that the marketability of graduates from Kolej Komuniti this year has achieved 97.4 percent.

He said that last year, the achievement was 95.4 percent and 80 percent in 2013.
