PUTRAJAYA: A staggering 4.2 million Malaysians have registered to participate in 17,648 events that will be held across the country in conjunction with National Sports Day tomorrow, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said that he hoped all the participants will give their all in the spirit of sports to make Malaysia a sporting nation besides fostering greater harmony among the people.

“I hope the figure will become a reality but our main worry is the weather. The weather is forecast to be good tomorrow but we are not certain if there are abrupt changes in wind patterns.

“We have issued guidelines to all the organisers about air quality and what they have to do if the Air Pollutants Index (API) reading breaches 100 or 150,” he told reporters after giving away the prizes to the winners of the Garmin MP Step Challenge here today.

Forty-six MPs from both sides of the divide had taken up the challenge of fitness lasting three weeks from Sept 11 to enliven National Sports Day.

It entailed fitting of the Garmin Vivofit 2 device to monitor their daily activities including the number of steps they did and amount of calories burnt.

The Olympic category (under 45 years) was won by Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming from DAP who did an average of 18,401 steps a day. Second was Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut) with 16,456 steps and third Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai) (16,022 steps).

The Universe category (45 years and above) was won by Kangar MP Shaharuddin Ismail from BN (35,416 steps) while Ko Chung Sen (DAP-Kampar) was second (26,427 steps) and Sim Tong Him (DAP-Kota Melaka) third (25,386 steps).

The women’s category was won by Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai) (16,022 steps). Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (BN-Masjid Tanah) was second with 13,953 steps and Noraini Ahmad (BN-Parit Sulong) third (12,898 steps).-BERNAMA
