KUCHING: The people should adopt exercising as a way of life in line with the government’s efforts to eradicate obesity and other serious diseases.

In pointing this out, political secretary to the chief minister, Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, said events such as the National Sports Day were among platforms created by the government through the Youth and Sports Ministry to inculcate sports as a way of life among Malaysians.

“The government wants everyone to be involved in sports and stay healthy, and I believe through the platform of the National Sports Day, it could lure those from their lazy couch to be outside and exercise,” says Hasidah.

She was speaking at the National Sports Day event for Kuching level at the State Library compound yesterday. The Samariang assemblywoman was representing Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg to officiate at the event.

Hasidah lauded the event, which she described as a forum where people from all walks of life, race and religion could converge in a healthy activity.

“Such event promotes unity through sports, and I believe this is something that we must continue to do in the future.”

She also stressed that with various diseases affecting Malaysians nowadays, it was pertinent for the people to exercise during their free time.

“Diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems are among the common diseases affecting Malaysians and we must work towards a healthier body and healthy society,” she added.

More than 1,000 people from various government agencies and the private sector participated in the event yesterday, which started with a zumba session, brisk walk and followed by various activities such as street soccer, telematch and contests.

Also present was Kuching Division Resident Shukarmin Chasemon.
