Local farmers urged to adopt modern agricultural practices

PAKAN: Local farmers here are advised to equip themselves with modern agricultural practices and knowledge to improve their productivity.

District Senior Assistant Agriculture Officer, Emak Uyu, made the call when officiating at the opening of a two-day course on Rubber and other commercial crops planting technology, organised by his office in collaboration with village security and development committee (JKKK) of Rumah Ujon @Unjong Ambu in Ulu Sugai near here recently.

“The knowledge you acquire through this course such as on bud grafting and nursery techniques will enable you to produce planting materials of high quality and save costs,” he told the course participants.

Reiterating that agriculture could generate high income if undertaken seriously, he advised the farmers to regard it as their main occupation.

He also advised the youths not to regard agriculture as ‘dirty’ job as they could earn a much higher income than salaried jobs if undertaken on a large scale.

A total of 86 residents from five longhouses in the area ( Rumah Ujon, Rumah Mancha Bangga, Rumah, Jenuang, Rumah Malang, Rumah Limbang who are participants of Cluster Rubber Planting

Scheme attended the two-day course

Invited to conduct the course were an officer from Sungai Paoh Agriculture Training Centre (SPATC) who taught the farmers how to do bud grafting and nursery; Melissa Inok (Hill Padi and palm oil farming); Benny Libau (Kontan and fruits farming); and a representative from Bayer Company who taught the participants on the correct usage of chemicals.

Tuai Rumah Ujon, on behalf of the participants thanked the Agriculture Department, SPATC and Bayer Company for sharing valuable knowledge with them. He hoped the participants would put into practice the knowledge they had acquired to enhance their productivity.
