MIRI: The Cancer Awareness Month ‘Gold Ribbon Week’ which was launched on Oct 9 here received an overwhelming response from members of public.

Held at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall, the three-day event had raised more awareness on childhood cancer.

“On behalf of SCCS, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our sponsors who have in one way and another made this event a success,” said Jocelyn Hee, secretary of Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) in her speech at the launch of the event.

She said the drive of Gold Ribbon is to make people know more about children’s cancer and also share with them the role played by SCCS in helping the victims and their families go through any difficult journey.

“Though the cause of many childhood cancers remains unknown so far, we hope through educating people on the signs

and symptoms, cases can be diagnosed earlier. With advancement in medical treatment and technology, we strongly believe early diagnosis can lead to higher survival rates for the children,” she said.

“We have been very fortunate to receive great support from the public and corporate companies over the years and we hope that through event like this, people would get to learn more about who we are and what we do.

“One ongoing project is a new half-way home in Miri which is now under renovation. We are happy to share the news with members of the public that if everything goes as according to schedule, the new home is ready for operation by the end of this year,” she said.

Among other activities held at the event were colouring, cartoon photo shooting, and kid performances.
