KUCHING: Fed up with the tearing down of metal barriers by ‘lori hantu’ or illegal lorries plying the Murum Road that seemed to know no end, Belaga assemblyman Liwan Lagang has urged enforcement agencies to make a concerted effort to nail the culprits.

He said the way the culprits used the road was as if there were no laws in the country.

“Talking about the same issue over and over again is getting into the nerves of most people living in Murum resettlement areas at Tegulang and Metalun.

“As the elected representative of the area, I would like to urge the enforcement agencies such as JPJ, traffic police and the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) to pool their resources together and nail the culprits who have continued to defy the laws once and for all,” Liwan told The Borneo Post here yesterday.

He also urged the enforcement agencies not to give up on fighting injustice on the road which was built for the people and not for the ‘lori hantu’ which were usually used by unlicensed lorry drivers and without valid licences.

Liwan pointed out that since these road metal barricades were built on the instruction of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, the enforcement officers should safeguard them as they were built for the safety of other road users.

“So I hope the enforcement officers will continue to carry out their duties without fear or favour,” said the Assistant Minister of Culture and Heritage.

Meanwhile, PBB Belaga Youth chief Henry Kilah Talek asked the relevant authorities especially the enforcement agencies to continuously carry out monitoring to ensure safety along the Murum Road, Bakun Road as well as the Mejawah-Belaga Road.

“But I do hope that the bigger metal road barricades which were erected last Sunday will keep the ‘lori hantu’ at bay. This is to ensure safety for smaller road users especially motorists and motorcyclists. They have suffered much as a result of potholes created by these overweight ‘lori hantu’,” said Henry.

He also hoped that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is expected to visit the area on Oct 15-16, would check the condition of the three roads while heading to his destinations.

On Friday, Ahmad Zahid is expected to officiate at a function in SMK Bakun in Sg Asap. Later in the day, he is expected to visit the Bakun HEP lake before launching the Belaga-Ng Merit Road to be built by the army under the Jiwa Murni programme.
