KL duo denies drug trafficking charges

KOTA KINABALU: Two Kuala Lumpur men claimed trial at the High Court here yesterday to separate charges of drug trafficking.

Henry Chan Kok Loon, 32, and Leong Hon Choong, 30, who were brought before justice Datuk Nurchaya Hj Arshad, were separately charged under Section 39B (1)(a) and punishable under Section 39B (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The indictment carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Henry, who was a car service advisor and Leong, who was a salesman had allegedly trafficked in 1,514.7 grammes and 2,510.4 grammes of syabu respectively, at the Narcotics Crimes Investigation Department at the Sabah police headquarters here at 10.15pm and 10.30pm respectively, on February 12.

The court fixed November 20 for pre-trial case management of the cases and both the accused persons were further remanded under Section 259 of the Criminal Procedure Code, pending disposal of the cases.

Deputy public prosecutor Aida Fatimah Datuk Abdul Jabar appeared for the prosecution while both the accused were represented by counsel Ram Singh.

In a separate case, three men were jailed four months by a Magistrate’s Court here for a separate drug charge.

In the first case, Jackson Lim Jiunn Hann, who was brought before magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, had allegedly possessed 0.4 gramme of syabu by the roadside along Jalan Bundusan in Penampang at 3.45pm on September 1.

The offence is framed under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for a maximum RM100,000 fine or a jail term of up to five years, or both, upon conviction.

Facts of the case stated that Jackson was arrested during an Ops Tapis operation where the police did a body check on him and asked if he possessed any illegal items.

Jackson then handed over a plastic, consisting of the drug which was confirmed by the Chemistry Department.

Meanwhile in the second and the third cases, Rissham Richard and Rojimal Bakri, who appeared before the magistrate, pleaded guilty to each of their charges under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a maximum jail of two years upon conviction.

Rissham and Rojimal were arrested at a police department here for consuming syabu after their urine analysis reports were tested positive of the drugs between August 20 and September 5.

The magistrate also ordered Rissham to be under police supervision for two years while Rojimal to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving their jail sentences.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Lim Swee Beng prosecuted all the three cases.
