KUCHING: A man was arrested on Wednesday night after he allegedly threatened a group of car re-possessors with a shotgun when they tried to take his wife’s pickup truck.

The incident happened around 8pm when the repo men went to a house at Kampung Stapok in Batu Kawah to take possession of a Toyota Hilux vehicle registered under a woman’s name for failure to pay the monthly instalments for the past four months.

The re-possessors were then contacted by the woman’s husband, who told them to meet up with him at a coffee shop in Desa Wira to discuss matters relating to his wife’s pickup.

The group went to the agreed meeting point where they were met by the man at 8.45pm and subsequently showed him an authorisation letter from the bank for them to repossess the vehicle.

At that point, the 48-year-old man (husband), who was heavily intoxicated at the time, took out a machete from his vehicle and slashed the back of one of the men.

When the other repo men tried to grab hold of him, the suspect suddenly pulled out a shotgun and pointed it at them, causing the group to flee helter-skelter.

The drunken man then got into his car and sped off, but was subsequently pursued by the re-possessors who also called the police to report the incident.

The group trailed the man all the way to Three Hills Park where they saw him dispose of the shotgun near a drain by the roadside.

They then made the decision to block his vehicle several metres down the road and apprehended the suspect before handing him over to police personnel dispatched to the scene.

The suspect later led police back to the spot where he threw the shotgun, which was found to contain a live cartridge, and was detained in the lockup pending further investigation.
