KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sukma XVIII shadow team golfer Bernard Yeo Chun How fired a two-day total gross score of 158 strokes to become the new champion of the Samarahan Country Club (SCC) Club Championship yesterday.

It was the first title win for the form four student from SMK Green Road in his debut appearance in the competition that was into its third year.

The 5-handicapper also became the youngest member to win the gross title after Michael Lee Jun Kiong won it last year and Oliver Ting in 2013.

“I feel very happy to have won today and this is my first win this year,” said Bernard who finished third in the US Kids Golf in Johor last year.

He walked away with the green jacket, challenge trophy and replica, RM2,000 merchandise voucher and a complimentary reserve parking lot for one year.

Bernard will be flying to Thailand tomorrow (Nov 3) with his Sukma Shadow teammates to play in the Singhai World Championship.

He will also be competing in the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup World Junior Golf Championship at Kelab Golf Sarawak from Nov 24-26 and the SGA Cup in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from Dec 14-16.

Meanwhile, Ng Soo Thian posted 159 strokes to finish in second spot in the gross competition to collect a merchandise voucher worth RM1,600 while Then Su Yew was three strokes further back and he received a merchandise voucher worth RM1,300.

Defending champion Michael Lee ended up in fourth spot on 162 after he lost to Then Su Yew on count back (OCB) but he beat another youngster Samdrick Yeo (162) also OCB.

Finishing in sixth to 10th positions were Bong Tee Yen (163), Kenny Chin (164 OCB), Nicholas Lau (164 OCB), Giannino Foo (164) and SCC president Brian Chien (170).

In the nett competition, Dominic Dado returned a two-day score of 136 to be crowned the champion. He received a trophy and merchandise voucher worth RM1,200.

Coming in second place was Wong Tai Onn on 138 after he beat Phua Siaw Yih OCB.

Wong picked up a merchandise voucher of RM900 while Phua received a merchandise voucher worth RM700.

The fourth to seventh finishers were Wan Saperi (140), Ahmad Kamal (143), Tony Paulus (144) and Willie Jabap (147).
