KUCHING: A 41-year-old man died on the spot following a head-on collision between his sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a truck near Kampung Menyan, Serian, at about 10.15am yesterday.

Chong Kwan Lim was believed to have attempted to overtake a vehicle when his vehicle collided with the oncoming truck that was heading towards Sri Aman.

The truck driver, Jusman Raja, an Indonesian, injured his vertebrae while a passenger Mendoh Lajal, 47, from Serian, broke her right leg as a result of the collision.

The accident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In a statement, Bomba Serian said they received the distress signal at 10.36am and immediately despatched a rescue team to the scene, which is about 22km away.

Chong was said to be still trapped in his SUV when Bomba personnel arrived.

Medical personnel from Serian Hospital confirmed his death at the scene.
