MIRI: Eleven students of Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang have been selected to represent Warrior Hockey Club girls team in the Under-16 Hockey Tournament at SMK Weston in Beaufort, Sabah.

Miri hockey coach Rudy Naziri accompanied the team which left for Sabah on Wednesday as the tournament falls on Nov 7-8.

“We leave early for Sabah so the team can have practice sessions on the turf at SMK Weston on Nov 5-6. Some of our new players are not familiar with the turf as we have been practising on a concrete floor,” he told The Borneo Post, adding that Miri has yet to have its own (Astroturf) hockey pitch.

Rudy said that the team comprises seven new players and four who played last year.

“Our experienced players are Charlena Lawing, Stefevia Siew, Maswaja George and Alicia Janie Ranggi who took part in the same tournament last year. We have high hopes that these experienced ones will guide the rookies to victory,” he said.

Prior to leaving for Sabah last Wednesday, assistant director of Miri Division Sports Council, Gloria James met up with the team to give them words of encouragement.

Gloria said the sports council has always been supportive of hockey, no matter where it is being held and hope the team can return with good news. — by Jacqueline Raphael
