PUTRAJAYA: MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam has called on Hindus in the country to invite Malaysians from all walks of life to come together and celebrate Deepavali in the true spirit of 1Malaysia.

In making this call, he said the celebration of Deepavali, which signified the victory of light over darkness, most fittingly reflected the journey of a racially diverse country like Malaysia.

Besides an opportunity to learn the culture and traditions of another community, Dr Subramaniam said this would also strengthen ties between the different races.

“Let’s invite Malaysians from the other races to celebrate together as this would be a chance to foster closer ties among us.

“People must savour the true meaning of Deepavali, which is the triumph of good over evil or darkness in life, hence filling their lives with brightness,” he said in his Deepavali message, here.

Dr Subramaniam, who is also Health Minister, also advised Malaysians to eat in moderation, choose a healthy diet and reduce food that are rich in fats and sugar.

“Malaysians are often spoilt for choice when it comes to food during the festive seasons. Do make the right choice of food so that you can celebrate Deepavali in a healthier manner,” he said.

On MIC, Dr Subramaniam said as party president, he had decided on a new direction for the 68-year-old party to elevate the Indian community to greater heights in the educational, economic and social spheres.

“The party has drawn up a transformational plan for the community so as to bring a big change towards solving the issues and problems, as well as improve the living standards of the Indian community,” he said.
