KUCHING: Kuching City North captured another gold medal at 29th Asian Intercity Bowling Championship on Thursday night, as defending champions Paranaque City tightened their grip on their title defence by bagging a fourth gold at Megalanes Adventure World in King’s Centre here.

The winning combination of Maimunah Arshad and Iyliana Abdullah finished tops in the women’s senior doubles competition after they downed 1,945 pinfalls.

Twenty-six pinfalls behind the champions were Nancy Yap and Wendy Ong of Kuala Lumpur while teammates Hasnah Jamaluddin and Julie Loo completed the Malaysian sweep of the top three spots with their total score of 1,882 pinfalls.

Wagiman Kassim and Edward Juit were also on target for Kuching City North when they bagged the bronze in the men’s senior doubles with their total score of 2,261 pinfalls.

Yesterday’s one gold and one bronze contribution from the Kuching City North bowlers on Thursday propelled the team to second spot in the medal standings with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, leapfrogging Pasay City of the Philippines in the tally.

On Thursday afternoon, Jonathan Ding Sagan and Christopher Tiong Lee Siong bagged the first gold for Kuching City North when they won the men’s doubles competition with 2,679 pinfalls.

As at 5pm yesterday, the contest for the men’s and women’s team events was ongoing while the men’s and women’s senior team events will be contested today.

A total of 176 bowlers from 15 teams are taking part in the championship hosted by Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak and organised by the Asian Intercity Bowling Council.

The championship ends tomorrow, with Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin closing the event at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching at 7pm.
