KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz says her successor will be identified by end-January as her term expires in April next year.

“We (Bank Negara) have a succession plan, five levels down. This reflects the solidness of the bank. And I do believe we have a candidate to succeed to become the governor.

“I would encourage the governance committee to convene and conclude this issue at least three months before the appointment (of the governor),” she told reporters after announcing the country’s third-quarter economic performance here yesterday.

Zeti was asked on the succession plan and when would the new governor be announced by BNM.

She said the central banks’ governance committee would study all credentials of a candidate prior to electing a governor based on the criteria stated in the Central Bank Act 2009 that the governor require certain background and certain credentials.

Zeti was appointed as the Governor of BNM in May 2000 and was the first woman in the position. — Bernama
