KUCHING: A jobless man was sentenced to seven years behind bars and ordered to be given five whippings by the Sessions Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to a robbery charge.

Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad imposed the sentence on Awangku Abdul Jamiludin Awang Zain, 33, who admitted that he committed the offence between 12.20pm and 12.30pm on Aug 27 this year.

He robbed a housewife of her wallet, identification card, six credit cards, mobile phone and RM160 at Kampung Tapah, near Mile 22 of Kuching-Serian Road. He was convicted on an amended charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code.

Initially on Sept 4 this year, he was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and four whippings after being convicted under Section 394 of the Penal Code. The presiding High Court Judge Datuk Rhodzariah Bujang had allowed his appeal against the sentence and ordered the case to be retried in Sessions Court. In quashing the sentence, she said the victim’s injuries were not caused by the accused but during a chase episode in the incident. DPP Poh Yih Tinn prosecuted the case.
