A new Act is enacted to authorise the Health Ministry to be involved in every stage of the water supply process, in effort to improve the water quality control to the consumers.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said if the proposed Act is passed by the Parliament, the ministry would ensure the water supplied to the consumers was completely safe to be used according to prescribed standards.

“At the moment, every process and stage (water supply) is under the responsibility of different agencies.

“With this new Act, we want to ensure that the ministry has the authority to be involved in all processes starting from the water intake source to the consumers’ house pipes,” he said when winding up the debate on the 2016 Supply Bill for his ministry at the Dewan Rakyat here, yesterday.

He said currently the power and function of the ministry in ensuring the supply of safe drinking water was only limited at the water source stage. – Bernama
