KUCHING: Sarawak’s performance in this year’s Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) was the best it achieved in the last 13 years, with a State Average Grade (GPN) of 2.48.

State Education Department director Rakayah Madon said this was a significant improvement over last year’s performance when the state’s GPN was 2.52.

GPN operates on a decreasing scale, whereby a lower index value indicates better candidate achievement.

On the percentage of straight A students this year, she revealed that it was 4.85 per cent – 1,998 students out of the 41,199 who sat for the examination.

“This is an increase of 0.44 per cent from 4.41 per cent in 2014 when 1,862 students scored straight As out of the 42,176 who sat for UPSR then.

“Out of the 1,998 students, 1,530 are students from government schools (SK) while the remaining 468 are from
Chinese schools (SJKC),” she said when announcing the UPSR results at the State Education Department Auditorium here yesterday.

This year also saw 20 or more students from 17 primary schools throughout the state scoring As in all subjects.

The top-scoring school with 58 straight A students was SK(A) Datuk Hj Abdul Kadir Hassan, Kuching followed by SK St Teresa, Kuching and SK St Anne, Sarikei with 39 and 37 straight A students respectively.

In addition, Rakayah noted that 124 schools recorded minimum Grade C passes in all subjects this year compared to only 116 schools last year.

Meanwhile, on the achievement of rural or interior schools in the state, she said their performance based on the School Average Grade (GPS) was very encouraging, with 20 out of 22 schools obtaining 1.50 GPS and below.

“Among these schools are SK Bakerkong, Daro with 1.00 GPS, SK Sg Kelabit, Miri (1.00 GPS), SK Taba Sait, Padawan (1.16 GPS), SK Sg Setulan, Bintulu (1.20 GPS), SK Sg Sebatu, Baram (1.25 GPS), SK Kpg Kuala Sibuti, Subis (1.30 GPS) and SK Ng Nansang, Song (1.30 GPS).

At the ceremony, Rakayah alongside Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi presented students who scored straight As in the UPSR examination with their result slip as well as a certificate of recognition from the State Education Department.
