KUCHING: Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMNS) will strive to do its best to monitor all tournaments being run throughout the state in order to avoid any untoward incident from happening in the future.

A statement released by the association yesterday said there was a need for this, in that there had been mishaps and unfortunate occurrences in past events, which were not sufficiently monitored.

“PMNS has always been abiding by the (technical and safety) guidelines set by the PMM (Muaythai Association of Malaysia).

“What’s worrying is that there could be amateur or ‘cowboy’ organisers out there who fail to follow such guidelines, or just couldn’t care less.”

PMNS pointed out the the guidelines covered the dos and don’ts before, during and after any bout, as well as what the organisers should check or look out throughout.

“In Malaysia, we are required to put medical personnel or paramedics on standby by the ring-side at all times.

“It is important for all to know, especially event organisers, that these guidelines are not made and enforced upon them simply for fun – each provision has been certified following strict reviewing by professionals.

“The ones that we enforce for tournaments in Malaysia are sanctioned by IFMA (International Federation of Muaythai Amateurs,” said the association.

On the recent incident where a 20-year-old muaythai exponent was pronounced dead during an event in Kota Samarahan, PMNS said it did not wish to give any comment as investigations were still ongoing.

“However, we wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of the fighter.

“It was a very unfortunate incident,” it said.
