KUCHING: The state capital has been given the honour to host the 18th Borneo Ladies Golf Challenge Trophy 2016 – touted to be among the most prestigious tournament for women in this region.

The event, set to be held at Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) on March 16-18 next year, is expected to gather 136 women golfers, according to organising chairperson Christina Foo.

“More significantly is about 75 per cent of golfers would be those coming from outside Sarawak, she said when met after performing a courtesy call on Chief Minister’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu at her home in Santubong near here yesterday.

Foo highlighted the tournament as the most popular amongst not only Sarawakian women golfers, but also those from Sabah, Labuan and Brunei Darussalam.

“It is an international team event, played over two days where the aggregate nett scores by the top four golfers of each team would determine their respective overall standing throughout the tournament, she said, pointing out that the event was first held in Sabah 25 years ago.

This city hosted the 1993 and 2008 editions.

“However, the 2016 edition will be a special one in that not only that we get to host it for the third time, but also to celebrate its silver anniversary here.

“It is worth mentioning that Sarawak was victorious in the last two tournaments that it hosted, and also in Labuan in 2013, Foo said, expressing her hope that the state team would again lift the challenge trophy next year.

“Being the host would certainly be an advantage, she added. Yesterday Foo led members of the organising committee, including Sarawak Golf Association president Hoan Kee Hock, to visit Jamilah who was accompanied by her husband Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

In her remarks, Jamilah said she hoped the federal Sports and Youth Ministry to render its solid support to the organisation of the tournament.

Apart from that, she also called for the involvement of those in the private sector to assist the committee towards making the Pan-Borneo tournament a successful event.

“The tournament is set to contribute positively towards promoting not only golf, but also Kuching. We have a lot to offer in terms of food, shopping, culture and other tourism aspects, Jamilah said.
