Barisan to field two women candidates in next state polls

KUCHING: The state Barisan Nasional (BN) will field at least two women candidates in the next state election.

Answering a question from a participant during Forum Belia Tegas 2015 yesterday, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem said he wished to see more women participate in the state’s development as elected representatives.

“We currently have four BN assemblywomen. I believe women contribute significantly to the state’s development and more,” he added.

Should Sarawak BN field two new women candidates, they would join the ranks of assemblywomen Datuk Fatimah Abdullah (Dalat), Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman

Ghazali (Samariang), Simoi Peri (Lingga) and Rosey Yunus (Bekenu).

However, Adenan said the BN women candidates would have to win their seats first to fulfil the plan.

“Anybody eager to see more assemblywomen in the state, must hope that they would win in the next state election. All this will be just talk if they do not win,” he said.

Meanwhile Adenan, who is also state BN chairman, hoped that the creation of 11 new constituencies would give more representation to rural folk.

The proposed new constituencies are Batu Kitang, Stakan, Serembu, Triboh, Gedong, Kabong, Tellian, Selirik, Murum, Samalaju and Long Lama.

The closing of Forum Belia Tegas was held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday.
