KUCHING: Local councils are encouraged to provide mobile toilets in flood evacuation centres as it is a necessity for flood victims and those on duty.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said not all flood evacuation centres and halls had existing toilets.

“It is good if local councils can help provide mobile toilets in evacuation centres or evacuation halls. They can work together with the State Disaster Relief Committee,” she said after officiating at the ‘Flood Evacuation Simulation’ programme at Kampung Batu Kitang Jaya multipurpose hall yesterday.

Some 300 people including villagers from Kampung Batu Kitang and Kampung Batu Kitang Jaya took part in the programme.

Fatimah expressed her appreciation towards the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) for providing four units of mobile toilets at the hall.

She also revealed that there are a total of 610 flood evacuation centres in the State including 177 in Kuching and 51 centres in Samarahan.

The state government has also identified 19 food and other necessity suppliers and two front bases in Kuching for storing dry food for distribution to flood victims.

Datuk Fatimah revealed that the state recorded 570 disaster cases for which a total of RM3,755,319 in relief aid had been given to the 136,936 victims from January to September this year.

On the simulation programme, she said it was aimed at preparing the villagers on safety measures they can take in the event of a disaster.

It was also aimed at strengthening the cooperation between government and private agencies, welfare volunteers and community leaders when dealing with disasters.
