MIRI: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing announced a grant of RM50,000  for the Anglican Church in the state at the Northern Archdeaconry Fundraising Dinner for Church Ministry last Friday evening.

Speaking at the dinner, Tiong commended the Anglican Church for its contribution towards fostering peace and harmony of the state and nation and promised to request another RM100,000 from the special allocation of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Tiong who is also the president of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) also called upon elected representatives to voice out minor issues faced by the people instead of sensationalising them in Parliament.

“What’s important is for the wakil rakyat to focus on the people and work together to make Malaysia a model country of unity and multiracial harmony,” he said.

The fundraising event was attended by about 700 members of the Church and their guests including those from Brunei Darussalam.

Last year the Church raised  RM165,000 through pledges for its ministry in the Diocese of Kuching and Brunei.

The Northern Archdeaconry hoped to raise RM300,000 through pledges and donations.

The Most Rev Datuk Bolly Lapok Archbishop of The Anglican of the Province of Southeast Asia, who also spoke at the dinner said  the main objective of the fundraising was  to support the Diocese of Kuching in funding church ministry activities throughout the state.

“This includes the building fund and priest emolument. Besides that, some other rural and suburban parishes also need financial support from the diocese,” he added.

The dinner was organised by the parishes of Good Shepherd Lutong, St Columba’s Miri and St Barnabas Taman Tunku Miri with Rev Stanley Bunseng as the organising chairman.

Among the guests at the dinner were  Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk

Lee Kim Shin, Lambir Assemblyman Ripin Lamat, Miri Resident Antonia Kahti Galis, advisor of the Northern Archdeaconry venerable Archdeacon Jamal Senada and The Right Rev Solomon Cheong.

Lee and Ripin both pledged a grant of RM10,000 each while Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau promised a grant of RM5,000.
