SIBU: A family member of 50-year-old accident victim Ting Yew Kui wants the police to conduct a thorough and fair probe into the collision which claimed his life Monday evening (Nov 23).
Dudong assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong, representing the family, claimed that at about 7pm after the incident, someone approached the victim’s wife and gave her Ting’s MyKad.
“The family members are not happy as to why a third party has the victim’s MyKad in their possession,” he said, stressing the importance of preserving all exhibits belonging to the victims and that investigations be conducted transparently and in full accordance of the law.
Ting, a spare parts worker with an oil palm plantation, was believed to be on his way to buy rations at Sing Kwong Supermarket at Kin Orient Building when the collision with the black Porsche sports car occurred at 6.20pm in front of St John’s Anglican Church on Tun Abang Haji Openg Road.
He is survived by his wife, Ting Leh Ung, a primary school teacher, and a 10-year-old son.
Deputy Sibu police chief Supt Martin Koo confirmed that the police had detained the driver, in his 30s, immediately after the fatal accident, taking a statement from him before releasing him on police bail.
The driver, believed to be a friend of the car owner, is recuperating at Sibu Medical Centre for injuries to his left shoulder.
