SIBU: The family of Monday’s fatal accident victim Ting Yew Kui wants the police to conduct a thorough and fair probe into the incident.

Dudong assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong in representing the family said the police ought to probe with transparency.

“We do not want any cover up to ensure public interest is looked into,” he told a press conference at the Sibu Hospital mortuary yesterday morning.

Ting is believed to have died on the spot after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a sports car in front of St John’s Anglican Church at Tun Abang Haji Openg Road at about 6.20pm.

The impact of the collision sent both vehicles into the fence of the church, bringing down a portion of the concrete wall.

The 50-year-old rider, a spare parts worker with an oil palm plantation, was said to be on his way to buy some rations at Sing Kwong Supermarket when the accident occurred.

He leaves behind his primary school teacher wife and a 10-year-old son.

Yap claimed that about
7pm after the incident, someone had approached the victim’s wife and gave her his (victim’s) MyKad.

“The family is not happy as to why a third party had the victim’s MyKad and how it ended up in the hand of a third party,” he said.

Yap said it was the duty of the police to keep all the exhibits of victims, be they victims of accident or murder.

He said the police should not allow any exhibit to be taken away after an accident as it could be regarded as an interference of evidence.

“It is very unfortunate that such an incident should occur and the family members hope the police will conduct their investigation with transparency.”

Meanwhile, deputy police chief here Supt Martin Koo confirmed that the police had detained the
30-something driver of the sports car immediately after the accident.

Koo did not rule out reckless driving as the cause of accident.

He said the police had also recorded a statement from the driver before releasing him on police bail.

The driver, believed to be a friend of the car owner, is injured and is currently recuperating at the Sibu Medical Centre.
