Nafas allocates RM1 million to help flood victims this year

MUAR: The National Farmers’ Association (Nafas) will allocate RM1 million as a preparation to help members of Area Farmers Organisations (PPK) nationwide who are affected by floods this year.

Its chairman, Datuk Seri Saipolbahari Suib, said focus was being given to flood-prone states, namely Kelantan, Kedah, Johor and Pahang.

“We provide the allocation, but we will also look at the losses incurred by the victims, and if the number of victims increase, we will increase the allocation too.

All PPK and State Farmers Organisations (PPN), as well as agriculture officers should give a report on the flood situation in their respective areas so that all aid and assistance, as well as the logistics, could be placed at one collection centre before being distributed to flood victims.”.

He said this to reporters after the opening of ‘Jalinan Tani Muar’ programme at Dataran Budaya Kampung Parit Tengah Batu 18, Ayer Hitam, Bakri, here yesterday.

Also present were Nafas general manager Datuk Ab Rahman Ismail and Johor Peladangnita chairman Zarina Mohamed Bain.

Meanwhile, on the fact that only 5,000 out of 850,000 PPK members had invested in Dana Peladang Kebangsaan (National Farmers’Fund), Saipolbahari said this was due to the problems in the transaction system, which was expected to be solved by year’s end.

He said right now the PPK members had to go to Nafas headquarters in Kuala Lumpur to invest in the fund as there was no system that could enable them to make the transaction at their respective PPK.

The problems are being addressed, including to develop a new system to enable the transaction to be done at all PPK, involving an allocation of RM7.9 million, he added. — Bernama
