KUCHING: This year’s World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships, which kicked off yesterday in Bangkok, marks Awang Mohamad Azizul Ghani’s international debut after five years in the sport. But he aims to do well.

The reigning Mr Malaysia titleholder said the event could have been his second international had he not missed the Asian tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last month.

“I was engaged in an assignment then. However, I’m happy that I’m able to go for the world championships in Bangkok this time, not only because it’s my first time but I also get to see my mentor Dr Malvern Abdullah competing as well,” said the 29-year-old, who is eyeing the top spot in the Welterweight (70-75kg) category.

Last year’s Mr Malaysia champion Malvern, on the other hand, is targeting the title in his favourite Lightweight (65-70kg) category. The Bangkok outing is the veteran bodybuilder’s fourth international appearance.

“I placed among top five in the Asian championships in Tashkent last month. For Bangkok, I’m aiming for top three,” said the 40-year-old lecturer.

Both athletes arrived in Bangkok yesterday, joining the rest of the national squad there.

The seventh edition of World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championships, organised by World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPF) with Thailand Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Association hosting, will run till Nov 30.

It features 11 major categories, including women’s bodybuilding and physique events.
