KUCHING: Thirty-three athletes from various centres of excellence for wushu in the state are attending the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) workshop at WFS headquarters at Tabuan Laru from Nov 23 to Dec 23.

Among them are eight members of the Sukma back-up squad. The participants are from Kuching, Sibu, and Sarikei.

The workshop is conducted by Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) state coach Lau Hui Wei and also involved are MSNS centre of excellence Kuching coach Ling Ung Hee and Sibu coach Wong Hua Yiing.

“Components of this workshop are foundation wushu, mental and physical training as well as stretching,” said Lau yesterday.

Meanwhile, WFS deputy president James Ting said the workshop was beneficial to the development of wushu in Sarawak as a whole.

“Besides imparting of basic knowledge of wushu to the participants, the coaches from centres of excellence also benefit from the new knowledge and the application of sports science to wushu training. In a way, the course helps to upgrade their standard of coaching,” he said.

“We constantly need this kind of courses to upgrade the coaches’ standard.”

“We are also instilling discipline in the kids as wushu is one of the high performance sports where good discipline is a priority,” he added.

Apart from that, Ting said the participants also get the chance to build and strengthen teamwork and the course also aimed to build and enhance ties between the athletes and coaches.

He said the participants also get to know the requirements for athletes to be selected for the state Sukma squads.
