KUCHING: Suzairi Iqmah of Sabah Golf Association and Princess Superal of the Philippines were crowned the new boys’ and girls’ champions respectively at the 17th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup International Junior Golf Championship at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) yesterday.

Suzairi, 16, posted a three-day total gross score of 221 (74-73-74) to lift the Boys’ A title and the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup for his fourth win of the year.

Prior to yesterday’s triumph, the young golfer from Kota Kinabalu had won in the Sportsexcel, the Labuan Amateur Open and the Karambunai Open earlier this year.

He also picked up another title after partnering Victor Ng Yu Kai, Casper Loh and Fazley Chua to win the team event on 678 points.

The first runner-up in Boys’ A was Sarawak Golf Association golfer and Sukma Shadow team member Aziel Teo Ken Yi who shot a gross total of 225, followed by teammate Lim Beng Keat (226), Casper Loh (228) of Sabah GA and Kim Taewoo (230) of South Korea.

Alvin Hiew of Johor captured the Boys’ Special title after returning a three-day score of 231 while Fazley Chua of Sabah GA beat Azim Junaidi of Kelab Golf Miri on countback (ocb) after both returned a similar score of 232.

Meanwhile, in the Girls’ Special, Princess posted a three-day total gross score of 212 to lift the Sarawak Chief Minister challenge trophy. Second was Norashahira Alisa Che Omar of Johor who finished 41 strokes behind the clear winner.

Philippines made a clean sweep of the top three positions in Girls’ A, with Pauline Del Rosario taking the main prize with 217 strokes, Mikhaela Fortuna second on 222 and Abegail Arevalo third three strokes further adrift.

They also bagged the team event with fourth player Bernice Oliveraez-Ilas after accumulating 650 strokes.

Saxen Hii Shong Yao of Kuching defeated first and second day leader Anson Yeo Boon Xiang of KGS on a play-off after both tied for 211 gross score after three days, to clinch the Boys’ D title.

His elder sister Angel Hii was second in Girls’ C after losing by three strokes to Kayanat Sompong of International Sports Thailand whose score was 237.

Another winner from Sarawak was Mirable Ting Ern Hui of KGM who topped the Girls’ D competition with a 224.

The three-day international golf championship organised by Sarawak GA attracted 133 golfers from 37 golf clubs in South Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia and host Malaysia.
