Mah: 1MDB-CGN deal not linked to nuclear power project in M’sia

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM9.83 billion deal signed between 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and China General Nuclear Power Corp (CGN) recently, has nothing to do with the nuclear power project in Malaysia.

In charge of overseeing the nuclear energy industry, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Mah Siew Keong, had also clarified that no decision has been made on the nuclear power project.

He said this in response to a question by Parti Amanah Negara strategic director, Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, on whether any future nuclear projects were promised to CGN following the takeover of 1MDB’s Edra Global Energy Bhd.

It was announced on Nov 23 that 1MDB is selling its 100 per cent stake in all its energy assets held under Edra Global Energy to CGN.

“I must say that it was indeed a presumptuous question by Dzulkefly and thanked him for his concern. It is far-fetched and fanciful to link nuclear power project with the recently inked deal between 1MDB and CGN just because the word ‘nuclear’ is consisted in CGN,” Mah said in a statement yesterday.

He noted that all parties should be more discreet and responsible while making a statement.

“There must be no deliberate attempt to drag the nuclear energy industry into the 1MDB-CGN deal or politicise it by making baseless statement or question. — Bernama
