MIRI: The United People’s Party (UPP) has proposed the construction of a multi-storey car park near Miri Hospital.

UPP Piasau chairman Datuk Hii King Chiong said the present gazetted 450 parking spaces and the new temporary 160 parking spaces are not enough for patients and visitors.

“UPP proposes a multi-storey car park complete with a restaurant to give a more conducive environment for those visiting Miri Hospital,” he said after presenting over RM20,000 worth of pillows, two air conditioners and two televisions to Miri Hospital yesterday.

He also promised two water dispensers, 10 sleeping chairs for parents waiting for children seeking treatment and plastic chairs requested by the hospital.

During his visit yesterday, Hii said many cars were still parked outside the hospital compound along yellow lines and some were obstructing the flow of traffic.

The UPP Northern Region coordinator said many patients at the hospital are from Lawas, Limbang, Baram, Marudi, Niah and Bakong.

“The people must have a conducive environment and the parking issue must be looked into promptly for long-term planning,” he said.

Hii suggested the multi-storey car park be privatised so that the hospital would not have manage its maintenance.

He urged more corporate bodies to help the hospital as part of their corporate social responsibility to the community.

“We must give service to the people, especially those patients coming from rural areas and our UPP’s contributions can help ease the hospital’s burden,” he added.
