LAHAD DATU: A man and a woman were killed after their Proton Saga FLX car collided head-on with a trailer at Km 38, Jalan Silam here yesterday.

The driver of the car, Haliman bin Majid, 33, and his passenger Nurzaini Zainuddin, 23, were believed to be heading from Jalan Silam to Lahad Datu town when the incident took place about 2.10pm.

District police chief ACP Hamzah Ahmad said the incident occurred when the car, which was heading towards Lahad Datu from Tawau, entered the opposite direction and collided with the trailer.

“The car driver lost control of his vehicle, believed to be caused by the slippery road, and collided head on with the trailer from the opposite direction.

“The accident caused the car to be dragged about ten meters from the scene,” he said, adding that the trailer driver escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile, district Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Apandi Mahmood said his department was alerted at 2.16pm and rushed a fire engine with nine personnel to the scene.

“We arrived at the scene at 2.40pm and immediately freed two victims who were trapped inside the car. We took ten minutes to free both of them.

“Both the victims were confirmed dead and were handed to the police for further action,” he added.
