MUKAH: Mukah town will receive an additional six million litres a day (MLD) of treated water to significantly improve the supply of water to residents here.

Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) chief executive officer Tan Sri Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot said in a press statement yesterday that the government has looked seriously into this matter and assured that the town and the existing Mukah Polytechnic will receive up to an additional 5MLD of treated water.

He also highlighted that Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) new Mukah campus will receive up to 1MLD of treated water. “Recoda together with the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak made it a priority to complete this project on time in order to improve the water supply situation in Mukah town, especially to the new UiTM campus, right at a time when new students are already coming in,” Wilson said during a special site visit to the new UiTM Mukah Campus on Thursday.

He pointed out that the 1MLD supply of treated water for the campus was an interim measure, while works on increasing Mukah’s water supply capacity to 67MLD continues to be carried out at a total cost of RM200 million.

This project is scheduled for completion by the end of next year.

He also explained that once completed, the two projects through the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) federal funding will help to resolve Mukah’s water supply issues.

“With this, the people of Mukah will soon be enjoying good water pressure, which will benefit a lot of people, especially those living here as well as those coming to study in the various learning institutions in the years to come,” said Wilson.

Meanwhile, UiTM Mukah campus assistant rector Khalik Ibrahim highlighted the facilities at the campus and how it was completed on time for the arrival of the first batch of 1,000 students for the inaugural semester, which begins on Monday (Nov 30).

“On behalf of UiTM, we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to Recoda and JKR on the timely delivery of the water supply to the new campus,” he said.

Among those present during the site visit were JKR Mukah divisional engineer Hipani Alwi, Mukah Resident’s Office administrative officer Petrone Benedict Sunggoh and Politeknik Mukah collaboration officer Harmen Muda.

Mukah is one of the five growth nodes of SCORE and plans are in place to develop the town into a smart city whereby one of the components is an education hub, which will play a vital role in supplying the technical workforce to meet the expected one million new jobs created by SCORE by 2030.

Apart from the water supply project, another ongoing SCORE project by Recoda and JKR Sarawak – funded by the federal government – is the massive earthworks for the new Mukah Airport.
