MIRI: Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) is currently in the process of implementing six new 33KV substations throughout the city.

Its regional manager (Northern Region) Choo Min Chong said the substations had been identified; at Curtin, Permyjaya, Taman Tunku, Jee Foh (Krokop), Piasau and Marina.

“The work at Permyjaya has been completed and will be commissioned for service early next year. The substation at Taman Tunku will be completed by end of next year while the one at Jee Foh is still in progress.

“We are still scouting for suitable sites to put up the substations at Piasau and Marina. For the project at Curtin, we are in the process of negotiation,” he told the media after a briefing with Miri City Council (MCC) on Miri Electricity System Development at the council’s premises yesterday.

Choo admitted that SEB had received frequent complaints from members of the public on power breakdowns at residential areas as well as the street lighting.

However, he said the power supply had now improved with the completion of few projects this year.

The SEB, he added, would continue to improve its services in effort to meet the increasing usage among the people of the city as well as industries.

Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai, meanwhile, said the objective of the dialogue with SEB was to get feedback on the frequent public complaints received by the council regarding the breakdown of street lighting.

“We have received a lot of complaints on the streetlights especially in Kuala Baram, Miri Bypass and Lutong MyyMall areas.

“Thus, we are requesting for Sesco carry out the maintenance of street lights at the areas concerned.

On the closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs), he was hoping that the system could be started by mid-December.

He said the installation of CCTVs was implemented under the Safe City Project. Twenty CCTVs had been installed at crime-prone areas in and around the city.

Deputy mayor Mohd Chee Kadir was among those present at the press conference.
