Selangor unstoppable for table tennis crown

KUCHING: Selangor are well on their way to lifting the overall championship crown after capturing three more gold medals in the doubles competition at the 28th Milo-Malaysia Hopes Table Tennis Championship at SJK Chung Hua No. 3 Alumni Hall late Thursday.

The powerhouse have so far won four gold medals in the competition, with the other gold won in the Girls’ U13 team event earlier.

In the Girls’ U13 doubles final, Sammy Tay Tay and Kuan E Xuan beat Sabah’s Loh Qiao Ni and Zoe Fong Yi Chong 3-1 while Lee Yong Yi and Yong Swee Hong edged the Kuala Lumpur pair of Ngan Ka Chun and Caleb Hong Zi An 3-2 for the Boys’ U10 doubles crown.

Selangor’s other title won on Thursday was in the Girls’ U10 doubles where Lee Xin Ni and Tan Teck Heang blanked Negeri Sembilan pair of Lee Kar Ern and Chan Jing Fei 3-0 in the final.

Kuala Lumpur prevented Selangor from making a clean sweep in the doubles competition when Danny Ng Wann Sing and Daniel Choo beat Tan Yi Heng and Wong Qi Shen 3-2 in an all-Kuala Lumpur Boys’ U10 doubles final.

Sarawak, who bagged the Boys’ U13 team gold , had to be contented with a bronze medal from Sia Hsia Ling and Too Ying Xin in the Girls’ U10 doubles after they lost 1-3 to Selangor’s Lee Xin Ni and Tan Teck Heang.

Meanwhile, in the singles competition that got underway yesterday, number two seed from Sarawak Karen Lyne Dick led two other teammates Tay Lynn Jia and Fion Soh Jai Xi into the round of last 16 of the Girls’ U13 singles.

Karen, who got a first round bye, beat Then Kai Qi of Melaka 3-0 and will next face Selangor’s Lau Zhi Xuan after the latter disposed of Ku Xie Jie of Kedah 3-1.

Lynn Jia and Fon Soh sealed their places in the last 16 with 3-1 wins over Lim Pei Wen of Kedah and Wendy Ong Chia Yee of Kedah.

In the Boys’ U13 singles, all 10 Sarawak representatives advanced to the last 16, with top seed Christopher Goh Kho Hian Hui and second seed Too Ying Chuen getting first round byes while others are Lee Chen Hong, Louis Chung, Lee Yee Jat, Wilson Kiu, Tang Shi Han, Alan Teo, Joel Chen and Boon Jia Xian.

The Boys’ U10 singles contest also saw 10 of Sarawak paddlers making it to the last 32. They are Bryan Ngu, Tan Ern Quan, Chong Kai Jit, Boon Jia Quan, Brandon Tan, Hary Lau, Alfred Ting, Kueh Jiin Jiang, Huang Kee Sheng and Vincent Tan.

Those making it to the last 32 of the Girls’ U10 singles are Candy Tan, Angeline Tian, Eileen Lau, Patricia Bong, Sia Hsiao Ling, Joanne Yong, Too Ying Xin, Liong Jie En and Joanne Chen.
