KUCHING: The newly-launched Tea FM aims to attract the young urban demographics across Sarawak and Sabah through its Chinese and English content.

The 24-hour radio station, jointly owned by Alpha Impress Sdn Bhd and Redberry Media, was officially launched during an event at KTS Garden near Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim here last night, where Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem and wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu were present as key distinguished guests.

According to Redberry Media chief executive officer Datuk Siew Ka Wei , the idea of coming up with an East Malaysian-based radio station came about last year.

“We made our on-air debut on Aug 1 this year in Kuching, followed by Kota Kinabalu shortly after that. As for now, the broadcast is only limited to the urban areas in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu,” he said.

The night was made more exciting when KTS Group managing director Dato Henry Lau, who was accompanied by his wife Datin Wendy Lau, offered 10 special prizes to lucky guests who could give the meaning behind the name ‘Tea FM’, which was not revealed during the ceremony.

Other VIPs of the nights were Assistant Minister of Community Services Datuk Peter Nansian, Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong, Opar assemblyman Ranum Mina as well as local Chinese community leaders and business associates.

The event was made even more entertaining with performances by popular singers Will Ng and Rose Iwanaga.

More significantly, it managed to raise RM200,000, of which proceeds would go to charity.

Tea FM broadcasts via 102.7FM here, and 102.8FM in Kota Kinabalu.

It is learned that plans of expanding its broadcast into other areas in the two states are in the pipeline.

The content is described by the owners as 60 per cent Chinese and 40 per cent English, focusing on listeners in the 20-40 age group.

The English segment runs from 7pm to midnight daily, and the Chinese segment from 6am to 7pm. In between midnight and 6am, the station allocates its ‘all-night music’ segment.

Currently, the station has 13 full and part-time deejays. The studio is on Level 10 of Crown Towers near Jalan Pending here.
