capture-20151129-004714KUCHING: Eight swimmers from Sarawak are in the Malaysian team to compete in the South East Asia Age Group Championship in Danang, Vietnam from Dec 4-6.

They include current national swimmers Welson Sim and Angela Chieng, with Nee Gui Ping, Hii Puong Hou and his younger brother Puong Wei, Adrian Chua, Muhd Naqeb and Tan Tyng also making the grade.

While Welson and Angela are expected to win medals, it will be a good exposure for the other six who are either in the state Sukma shadow team or back-up team.

According an official from the Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak, sending the state swimmers to the Vietnam meet is part of the development programme of Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (Asum).

“Asum are sending the top six swimmers from Group 1, 2 and 3 to participate in the age group championship.

The swimmers have qualified either on merit from the National Age Group Swimming Championship or being ranked the top six of their respective age group,” he said.

“This is a good opportunity especially for the debutants to better their personal bests and gain experience from competing at the meet,” he added.
