KINABATANGAN:: A 47-year-old Indonesian plantation worker died in a fire that destroyed a double-storey worker’s house at Jago Harmoni Estate here yesterday.

District police chief Superintendent A. Sahak Rahmat said the victim had been identified as Marcelius Woda.

His body was found in the kitchen by firemen at 6.23am, almost three hours after the firemen started putting out the fire.

The fire completely destroyed the house in the 3.50am incident, and initial police investigation revealed that the victim had left the kitchen stove fire on before it spread to the kitchen, trapping Marcelius inside.

Estate workers tried to put out the fire with a water tank but failed as the fire had spread too fast.

Five firemen and one fire engine were sent to the location.

Sahak said the body had been sent to the Kinabatangan Hospital for post motem, adding that  no criminal element was suspected in the case.
