Methodist Care Centre spokeswoman Chew Siok Cheng said the activities were held to mark the ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ on Dec 3.

“The aim of this unique smile event is to create awareness and understanding of society towards the disability issues and disabled people’s right and dignity.

“The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is coordinated by United Nations Enable, which works to support and promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.”

The United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons was held from 1983 to 1992 to enable governments and organisations to implement measures to improve the life of disabled persons all over the world.

It was first observed on Dec 3, 1992.

On Dec 18, 2007, the assembly changed the observance’s name from ‘International Day of Disabled Persons’ to the ‘International day of Persons with Disabilities’.

Chew expressed her gratitude to Mafrica Corporation Sdn Bhd for its support on human support, planning and creating activity, sponsoring prizes for games and refreshment and prizes for the ‘Unique Smile photography contest and treasure hunt.

“Hopefully, the persons with disabilities will enjoy the treasure hunt and have a very pleasant and great day.”
