‘Sabah records highest number of teen pregnancies’

KOTA KINABALU: A young girl from Ranau yesterday enumerated how she started a relationship with a man she barely knew, got impregnated and terminated her pregnancy at a clinic here.

Speaking on condition of anonymity at the awareness programme entitled “Sebening Kasih, Sejuta Harapan; Melestari Keluarga Bahagia”, the teenager clad in a black shirt and long black pants as well as a mask and a cap told audience that the man provided her with a handphone as well as bought her many things.

As a result of her relationship, she stopped going to school, she said.

And two months after ending her pregnancy, the man she had a relationship with also disappeared without a trace, she said.

Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister, Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid, who was present at the event, said that Sabah recorded the highest incidence of teen pregnancies with 4,795 cases.

She said that of the total, eight percent involved unwed mothers.

The State with the second highest number of cases was Sarawak with 3,395 cases, followed by Selangor with 1,486 cases.

With regard to rape cases, the Royal Malaysia Police has reported 12,473 cases from 2011 to June 2015.

She said that of the total, 11,667 of the rape victims were between 13 years old and 18 years old.

It was also reported that there were 435 cases of unwanted babies in Sabah between the year 2011 and June 2015.
