ALL members of the August House have been asked to render cooperation and support to make sure that Sarawak would host the best Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2016 and emerge overall champion.

Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who made this call yesterday, said a comprehensive training programme would be planned for 2,000 general volunteers next month as part of concerted efforts to ensure that the national sports meet would be a success.

He said several courses had also been conducted for coaches, technical coaches, sports associations, officials, volunteers and athletes.

“We have also set up a specialist team comprising sport experts, sport doctors, psychologists, nutritionists and performance analysts to support our athletes. Athletes will also be given good supplements like vitamins,” he said in a reply to Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi (BN-Pantai Damai) yesterday.

Lee said Sarawak needed to bag at least 72 gold medals in order to come out as overall champion next year, where a total of 360 gold medals would be up for grabs.

“Our objective as the host for Sukma 2016 is to be the overall champion and the best host in the history of the games.”

Lee said all the relevant venues to be utilised for the national event would be ready and completed by March next year, in view of the games to be held in Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Sibu and Miri.

On a separate issue, Lee said the proposed Batang Igan Bridge had been submitted to the Works Ministry for consideration and approval under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).

“To date, no allocation has been approved for its physical implementation,” he said in replying Abu Seman Jahwie (BN-Jemoreng).

On Abu Seman’s supplementary questions, Lee said the estimated cost for the proposed project was RM250 million, while the scope of works included constructing a bridge spanning 1,336m and a 8km road.

In response to a question raised by Alexander Vincent (BN-Ngemah), Lee said the proposed 9.6km Jalan Nanga Ngemah-Nanga Temalat, which was termed as the ‘missing link’ of the Sibu-Kapit Road, had been approved for implementation under the 11MP.

The Public Works Department-R3 standard road project is estimated to cost RM114 million.
