Ninety players vie for Open International Chess title

MIRI: Bruneian Yee Soon Wei won the Sarawak Open International Chess title to bag the RM4,000 cash prize here on Sunday .

Two Sabahans Abdul Sahim Wising and Faizal Andin emerged second and third respectively.

The annual nationally-rated competition was jointly organised by Sarawak Chess Association (SCA) and Permaisuri Imperial City Mall Miri (PICM) this year.

A total of 90 players participated in the four-day tournament featuring open, Under-15 and Under-12 categories.

They came from as far as Indonesia, the Philippines and Great Britain.

The competition used the 9-round Swiss system with the time control of 90 minutes per player.

Puteri Rifqah Fahada Azhar from Kuala Lumpur won the U-15 title beating out Darren Christopher Tay Xiong and Ahmad Afiq Adzly Rosli, both from Kuching.

It was a Sarawakian affair in the U-12 event as Kuching’s Muhd Alfaiz Daud emerged winner in front of two Miri youngsters Dexter Christopher Tay and Muhd Syukri Suhandi.

Subsidiary titles of best veteran and best lady went to Mohd Amin Abdullah and Ratimah Anua respectively.

Present at the prize giving ceremony was SCA president Abang Mohd Reduan Abang Sahari and vice-president Halim Led.
