LUNDU: The recent motivation camp held for Sukma-bound athletes at Camp Pueh in Sematan, Lundu has been described as a success.

Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) deputy director Lucas Kalang Laeng noted that the athletes were very motivated at the completion of their three-day camp.

Lucas, who represented permanent secretary to Ministry of Social Development Kameri Affandi, was officiating at the closing of the camp which was held from Dec 12-14 for the first group and Dec 15-17 for the second group.

He said a sense of togetherness and teamwork has been fostered among the athletes from various sports after they attended the activities in the special programme drawn up for them.

“You can see the way they enjoyed themselves after finishing the touch physical courses they went through and it is as if they have conquered something.

“The objective of the camp is to build comradeship among the Sarawak athletes. When they group together to compete in Sukma XVIII, they will recognise each other having been together going through the paces in the camp,” said Lucas.

He said MSNS are planning to have a similar motivation camp for the elite athletes in March.

A total of 120 athletes from sports such as cycling, weightlifting, tenpin bowling, volleyball, badminton, swimming, sepak takraw, silat, taekwondo formed the second group at the camp.

The first group of 111 athletes was from boxing, archery, tennis, lawn bowls, shooting, gymnastics (rhythmic and artistic) and hockey (men’s and women’s).
