KUALA LUMPUR: World junior champion, Goh Jin Wei needs to be more selective in her participation at international tournaments to maintain a more competitive rhythm in her game.

Serdang Badminton Club coach, Ong Ewe Hock said the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) need to provide the best training plan for Jin Wei as continuous competition would ‘burnout’ the national women’s singles player.

Ong was speaking to reporters at an event to announce telecommunications company, Red One as a sponsor of the Serdang Badminton Club at the X-TRM Badminton Academy in Seri Kembangan here yesterday.

After winning the World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru in early November, the 15-year-old athlete maintained her momentum to win the gold medal at the ASEAN School Sports Championships held in Brunei upon her return from South America.

Nonetheless Jin Wei lost her rhythm when she was easily defeated by national team mate, Tee Jing Yi in the final of the National Circuit Grand Prix Badminton Finals on Sunday.

Jin Wei who is representing the Serdang Badminton Club is scheduled to compete in the Purple League Badminton Championships which will end in January next year.

“For me, after two to three tournaments, Jin Wei should be rested and continue with training before competing again. When there is too much competition, an athlete’s performance will decline,” he said.

Ong who was a former national single’s player said he would reduce Jin Wei’s exposure at the Purple League if her game starts to falter.

Jin Wei when met conceded that she was feeling tired after the tight year-end schedule and would select important tournaments next year and targeted herself to be in the world top 80 to qualify for the Gold Grand Prix next year.

“I will try to rest well after this before resuming training next year. I will focus on one tournament at a time rather than competing in several championships consecutively,” said Jin Wei who is now ranked 139th in the world.

Jin Wei will start her competition with the China International Challenge from Jan 19-24. — Bernama
