SIBU: A new satellite town similar to that of Sibu Jaya may be in the offing in Kemuyang area near here.

Assistant Housing Development Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said yesterday this could happen if the new village in Kemuyang to house the extended family members of the fire victims of Kampung Datu/Hilir meets the population’s requirement in future.

There are 441 lots approved for the extended families for phase one of the project, covering 149 acres.

The Asajaya assemblyman said the village will have modern features, apart from being equipped with basic amenities.

“This (Kemuyang) area is a huge area and there are plans for second, third and even fourth phase (of development).

“This area will probably be a new satellite town like Sibu Jaya. So, this is the start of it. It can have a recreational area and if it meets the (population) number, there will be school coming up,” Abdul Karim told reporters yesterday.

He was met after accompanying Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Open to inspect the progress of works at the site here yesterday.

Joining them were Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee, Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) deputy CEO Hasbi Suhaili and Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem will perform a ground breaking ceremony for the project on Feb 14.

When asked on the name for this new village, Dr Annuar said Adenan would announce it during the earth-breaking.
