KUCHING: Yoyo enthusiasts in Sarawak will be thrilled to know that hundreds of YoYo players from all over Malaysia will converge on Kuching to participate in the Malaysia YoYo Championship 2016 from Jun 3 to 5.

Kelab Yo-Blitz Kuching chairman Ryan Han said the championship would be jointly organised by them and Persatuan Rakan Bestnye Sarawak, and would be held for the first time away from Kuala Lumpur.

“We won the 11th championship bid and it will be held at Plaza Merdeka Mall,” he told the press to announce the championship at Wisma Sultan Tengah here yesterday.

“We thank the state government and Assistant Minister of Social Development (Youth) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for supporting the event and for helping to develop the sport in Sarawak,” he added.

Han also thanked the management of Plaza Merdeka Mall for providing the venue for the championship, a very strategic and popular spot for youngsters in Kuching.

He added that the event should encourage people to be involved in healthy activities and to nurture their interest in the sport.

Han said they had been sending players to national championship since 2008 in Kuala Lumpur and since 2010 they were very active in organising competitions at district, town and state-levels.

He hoped that the national championship in June would open the sport to the people of Sarawak. Han said he would love to expand the championship to the Asia Pacific level and as for now Singapore had always been the host of the Asia Pacific YoYo championship. It would host it again in 2017.

The championship in Kuching, he added, would be attended by the main organiser and a committee member of Asia Pacific YoYo Championship Roy Teo who would evaluate the event and one of the judges.

Han disclosed that up to now 25 individuals from Terengganu had confirmed taking part in the event here but it was still too early to say how many participants the championship would attract.

“We are very committed in the sport and we are registered with Registrar of Societies since 2014,” he said.
