KOTA KINABALU: Running enthusiasts can look forward to becoming champions of the Seri Mengasih Heroes Run on April 10, this year.

The run, organized for the first time by the Family Support Group (FSG) of Seri Mengasih Centre, is aimed at raising funds for Sabah’s first special school that helps children whose requirements could not be met in mainstream schools.

FSG chairman Moses Chiuh revealed that Seri Mengasih was expecting 2,500 participants at the run event, a trend activity that has increasingly gained momentum and participants since last year.

“So we take up this as a new challenge, because when we do bazaar now the response is quite slow,” said Chiuh at a press conference and handing-over of the RM10,000 sponsorship from Azmi & Co at the Seri Mengasih Centre here yesterday.

“We try to attract new generation to come in, contribute and build up the centre,” he added.

Chiuh said the theme ‘Heroes’ brings special meaning to different people.

“For the children in Seri Mengasih, they are ‘Heroes’ for their unconditional love and sacrifices for their (parents) children,” he said.

“For the staff and management of the centre, they are ‘Heroes’ for their patience and support to train the children.

“Heroes also include those who have directly or indirectly made contributions to help children with special needs. Therefore, it is the right theme for this event,” explained Chiuh.

The Seri Mengasih Heroes Run is also held in conjunction of the centre’s 35th anniversary, which celebrates the achievements of the intellectually disabled and the organization championing their rights and abilities.

Apart from being a fund raising project, the run is also aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle and creating greater awareness of persons with intellectual disabilities in the community and highlighting them as ‘Heroes’.

The 10km run will start and finish at the Likas Sports Complex and members of the public are invited to dress up as their favourite ‘Heroes’.

Besides the 10km run, there will also be a separate 3km run at the Likas Sports Complex for persons with special needs and family members.

Due to interest shown by outstation running enthusiasts, the event also includes a Virtual Run for runners who cannot make it to the location of the run.

Registration fee for the run is RM70 and late registration is RM90. Each runner will receive a ‘Heroes’ medal, ‘Heroes’ theme race T-shirt and E-Certificate.

Seri Mengasih Centre is also offering a special group discount to encourage corporate bodies and other groups interested in supporting the children with specials needs at the centre.

Registration forms are available at the Wild Borneo Office, Likas driving golf range or online at http://serimengasih.org/heroes-run-2/.
